The size you order is the capital height—the height of an uppercase letter. That measurement establishes the scale for every other character in your wording, including the lowercase letters.

Lowercase letters are always shorter than capitals, but the difference depends entirely on the typestyle you select. In a typical block font, lowercase letters are approximately 70–75% of the capital height. In decorative scripts, the difference can be much greater. In Tangerine, for example, lowercase letters are only about 35% of the capital height.

Fonts with flourishes and swashes generally produce the smallest lowercase letters because much of the design’s overall height is occupied by decorative strokes rather than the letter body.

Example: If you order 6" letters in a script or swash font, the capitals will measure 6", but the lowercase letters may be closer to 2.25".
